In historical terms, the stretchiness of the word "recent" leads to an inherent unease. On the geological time scale, Ancient Rome is quite recent, while in the 21st century, bound encyclopedias – the pride of many 20th century suburban bookshelves – are outmoded.
For this series of work, botanical and geographical samples were cut from discarded encyclopedias. New imagery was made by shifting the samples by hand across the flatbed during the scanning process. These were then layered over digital images of classical marble and bronze sculpture sourced from online museum archives.
